Post-Surgical Care
-
Your child will wake up and recover from anesthesia in either the PACU or their hospital room if they are admitted
 -
Your child’s pain will be managed with Tylenol and/or Ibuprofen alternating for optimal control
-
Narcotic drugs are used sparingly and only for the first 24-72 hours, unless extenuating circumstances

 -
 -
Dressing Management:
-
If a dressing is placed in the OR, it is to be removed 48 hours after surgery followed by bacitracin 3x/day for 1 day
 -
If there is no dressing placed in the OR, bacitracin is to be applied to the incision 3x/day for 72 hours

 -
 -
When to wash:
-
Showering and washing of the incision should be done 48 hours after surgery
 -
Please use baby shampoo to lightly wash the area
 -
Do not be afraid to wash, however do not scrub aggressively or scratch with your nails
 -
Do not submerge the incision in water, rather just wash, dab dry, and leave open to air
 -
When rinsing, use a shower or pour clean water on the child’s head using a cup
 -
It is VERY important to wash the hair daily after surgery; this not only helps keep the incision clean and prevent infection but it helps with absorption of surgical glue and dissolvable stitches

 -
 -
Call or email Dr. Behbahani if your child experiences any of the following after their procedure as they can indicate there is an infection
-
Fevers, redness, drainage (pus), swelling, warmth, or irritation at the surgical site

 -
 -
Follow up:
-
You will return to clinic for follow up at 2 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year post-surgery
 -
Follow ups can be more frequent depending on pathology
